Introducing Some Latin American Music Greats

Most people are familiar with the smooth and upbeat sounds that Latin American musicians such as Carlos Santana, Ricky Martin and Gloria Estefan produced. However, the world of Latin American music is extremely large and some of the most talented artists are virtually unknown to international audiences. Here is a selection of some artists that are worth checking out.

Elis Regina

Elis ReginaThis fiery Brazilian singer rose to fame in the year 1965 after singing the now popular hit Arrastão at the TV Excelsior festival song contest. Elis Regina was celebrated for her perfect vocals and vibrant stage shows, and covered a number of music genres including samba, bossa nova, rock, pop and jazz. Tragically, Elis Regina died at the young age of 36 in 1982, but in just a few short years she had already scored a number of hits that secured her place in the Latin American music hall of fame.

Joe Arroyo

Born Alvaro José Arroyo González in the year 1955 in Colombia, Joe Arroyo is also commonly known as El Joe. He is considered to be among the greatest performers of Caribbean music in Colombia and had a whole host of hits during his vibrant career. In addition to being a prolific singer, composer and musician, Joe Arroyo also enjoyed a career as a record producer and worked his magic to help a number of other Latin American musicians rise to fame before his death in 2011 at the age of 55.

Seu Jorge

This Brazilian musician was born in Belford Roxo which can be found just north of Rio de Janeiro. Seu Jorge’s music covers a number of different musical genres including MPB, samba, soul and funk, and his most influential album was Samba Esporto Fino which he released back in 2011.

Juanes

Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez was born in 1972 in Colombia and was formerly a member of the heavy metal band EKhymosis. Juanes rose to fame in the year 2000 when he released his solo debut album Fijate Bien which scored him three Latin Grammy Awards.
